HISTORY

When approaching the Boulder Valley on Highway 36, the city of Boulder sits quietly nestled between the mountains and reality. At 5,430 feet about sea level and with a landscape of acres of vast open space next to the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, you will understand how special this quaint city of Boulder is in Colorado.

The Boulder Valley was the home of the Southern Arapaho tribe who lived in a village near Haystack Mountain. Other Indians such as Ute, Cheyenne, Comanche and Sioux were occasional visitors to the area.

Gold was abundant in the area and the first non-native settlement was established in October 1858 at Red Rocks near the entrance to Boulder Canyon. A year later A.A. Brookfield, the first president and shareholder of his company, organized the Boulder City Town Company. Four thousand forty-four lots were offered at a purchase price of $1,000 each but had to be lowered in order to attract more residents. In 1899, tungsten was discovered in the Boulder valley and Boulder became the leading producer of tungsten. This hard metal was used for the wire in a light bulb.

The Boulder Valley was part of the Nebraska Territory until February 1861 when the Territory of Colorado was created. Boulder City grew slowly and was developed as a supply base for miners searching for gold and silver. Entrepreneurial Boulder City residents supplied these miners with equipment, agricultural products, housing and transportation services. They also offered the miners gambling and drinking establishments.

The people of Boulder set up an economy just for the miners. Unlike most mining camps, in those days, Boulder offered a real town setting by establishing a railroad service, hospital, school buildings and a legitimate town government.

However, in 1905 the economy was failing and the people of Boulder saw that tourism was one of the ways to help grow their economy. With no first class hotel to attract summer visitors, the town raised money to build a hotel. In 1909, the Hotel Boulderado opened to the public for business.

For the next forty years, tourism dominated the Boulder economy with most tourists coming from Texas. When the country entered World War II, the Boulder economy once again weakened. The University in Boulder came to the rescue when it set up a program for the US Navy’s Japanese language school. Students attending this school loved the area and after the war, many returned to Boulder as professional and business people.

New residents coming to Boulder offered new opportunities and challenges. The long-term residents wanted to see their city grow but they also wanted to preserve the natural setting of the city. In the 1950’s, Boulder leaders instituted a “clean” industry regulation, improved transportation by building a new highway – the Boulder-Denver Turnpike – and established the National Bureau of Standards. “Clean” industries such as research and development soon followed and established companies in Boulder. New residential communities sprang up but Boulder still held onto its historic town atmosphere. Today the city of Boulder, Colorado still aspires to growing and accomplishing the growth in environmentally friendly ways.

 

STATISTICS

Boulder, Colorado is 35 miles northwest of Denver, Colorado in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and sits at 5,430 feet above sea level. Boulder comprises 25.37 square miles of natural beauty, outdoor recreation, natural product retailers and restaurants, outstanding alternative transportation options, diverse businesses, and technological and academic resources. Of the 25 square miles, 24 square miles is land and 1 square mile is water. Interestingly the 40 th parallel (40 degrees north latitude) runs through Boulder and is part of Boulder’s Baseline Road today.

As the 11 th most populous city in the state of Colorado, the Boulder Metropolitan Statistical Area estimated the population in 2005 was 280,440. The US Census Bureau in 2000 estimated that there were 39,595 households and 16,788 families residing in the Boulder. There are 40,726 housing units in Boulder and the population density is 3,884.1 sq. miles, which is higher than Denver.

Boulder’s population is younger – median age is 29 years old – than the national average – median age of 35.1 – because of the presence of university students. The median household income for Boulder is $47,577 and the median family income is $89,184. The per capita income for Boulder is $31,539. 17.4% of the population and 6.4% of families are below poverty level. The higher statistic for the poverty level is due to the large number of college students living in the area.

The weather is sunny and dry most of the time with occasional afternoon thunderstorms in late spring and summer. Winters are also sunny and dry with occasional snow that melts quickly. Winter daytime temperatures often reach 50 degrees F but the nights are frosty.

 

HOUSING

Boulder housing tends to be priced higher than surrounding areas. In the 2nd quarter of 2006, the median single family home in Boulder sold for $548,000 and the median attached dwelling (condo or town home) sold for $262,000. According to that National Association of Realtors, during the same period the median value of single family homes nationwide was $227,500. Some of the nicer subdivsions in Boulder are Island Greens and Country Club Estates.

Gunbarrel subdivision is an established neighborhood that was incorporated as a town in 1963. It covers an estimated 6.4 square miles. Gunbarrel began as a 668-acre subdivision shortly after construction of IBM’s plant near 63rd Street and the Diagonal Highway. The town of Gunbarrel is located just 2 miles from Boulder on Jay Road and 6 miles southwest of Longmont along the Diagonal Highway. With awesome views of the Front Range Mountains, the Gunbarrel neighborhood sits quietly between these two cities. Median annual family income estimated in 2003 was $73,710 and the median house value in 2002 was $342,750.

PARKS SYSTEM

Boulder, Colorado is surrounded by more than 31,000 acres of recreational open space and nature preserves. Since the 1950’s the community of Boulder has kept its promise to preserve the natural beauty in the Boulder Valley while being environmentally friendly.

There are many trails starting at the edge of Boulder or a short drive from Boulder to hike, bike and rock climb. Some of the trails vary from easy, difficult to technically challenging. The City of Boulder Open Spaceoversees all the parks, trails and recreational areas.

If you enjoy excellent rock climbing, go to Eldorado Canyon located near Eldorado Springs just six miles south of Boulder. Famous for its hundreds of world-renowned rock climbing routes this is a rock climber’s delight. Or you can try your skills at rock climbing at the Flatirons in Boulder Canyon. The Flatirons are made up of imposing slabs of sedimentary stone tilted upwards and is the most recognized symbol of Boulder. Located west of downtown Boulder you will find many challenges for new and experienced rock climbers.

Chautauqua Park is located at the base of Boulder’s Flatirons. This park is on the National Register of Historic Places and is a local landmark known for its cultural and educational summer retreat. Today twenty-six acres of land are leased to the City of Boulder and includes an auditorium, dining hall and academic hall. Voted as one of the top ten places artists love to perform because of its superior acoustics and intimate feel. The park also provides a network of hiking trails.

Flagstaff Mountain is at 6,850 feet giving you a fabulous views of the plains and Boulder Valley to the east. Make sure to stop at the Flagstaff Nature Center for excellent exhibits and to learn the rich history of the mountain and summit

Boulder Falls is located 11 miles west of Boulder, on the north side of Boulder Canyon Drive (SR 119) between Boulder and Nederland. Charles G. If you are looking for a climbing experience close to town, Flagstaff Mountain is the place to go. Just west of downtown Flagstaff Mountain is operated by the Boulder Mountain Parks Division and offers the Capstan route and several other routes within close proximity.

With over 43 miles of trails on Open Space and Mountain Parks, Boulder is a bicyclist’s heaven. Some of the great biking trails in Boulder are Greenbelt Plateau Trail taking you across an easy 1.6 miles of rolling mesa top through open grasslands. You’ll enjoy beautiful views of the foothills as the trail follows the old Highway 93 northward.

Another great trail is the High Plains Trail that snakes gently through the sweeping vistas of the Southern Grasslands Habitat Conservation Area. This trail offers you breath-taking views of wide-open prairie of pre-settlement days.

The Community Ditch Trail is four miles of moderate biking paths traveling through rolling grasslands and mesas. You’ll see areas of past agricultural life as well as early coal mining activity. There is a paved trail accessible to wheelchairs at Doudy Draw Trailhead that travels 0.3-mile to a picnic area with restrooms. From there a dirt path continues onto a junction at Community Ditch Bridge. Bicyclists may continue east on Community Ditch Trail (a dirt service road that crosses Highway 93 and travels east to Marshall Mesa), or follow Doudy Draw trail to the Flatirons Vista trailhead on Highway 93.

SCHOOLS

The Boulder Valley School District (BVSD) located at the Education Center, 6500 Arapahoe, Boulder, CO phone 303 447 1010 administers the public school system in Boulder, and neighboring cities and towns of Lafayette, Louiseville and Nederland.

The two largest high schools grades 9 through 12 in Boulder are Boulder High School and Fairview High School. The District also operates the smaller New Vista Hight School in the building formerly occupied by Base Line Middle School.

There are seventeen middle schools grades 6 through 8 in Boulder and thirty-four elementary schools grades K through 5 with fourteen pre-schools located in several of the elementary schools. A small portion of Boulder’s Gunbarrel subdivision located north of Lookout Road is operated by the St. Vrain Valley School District (SVVSD). These students attend Niwot High School and Niwot Elementary School in the nearby community of Niwot. Middle school students commute to Sunset Middle School in Longmont. SVVSD has charter schools available to Boulder residents living in the district.

University of Colorado At Boulder Student Loan Blog is the flagship university of the state of Colorado. A Tier 1 research institution that received more than $266 million in sponsored research awards for the 2007 fiscal year, placing it 13th nationally and 6th among all public universities. The university offers 85 majors at the bachelor’s level, 70 at the master’s level and 50 at the doctoral level. This publilc university has approximately 46,000 residents – 30,000 are undergraduate students, 6,000 graduate students and 10,000 staff/faculty.
