HISTORY

Cherry Creek, Colorado was originally named Harman in 1886 by Edwin Preston Harman, a lawyer and former Confederate officer. He named the town after himself and laid claim to 320 acres. However, in 1894 due to high tax rates and a nationwide depression the town of Harman was annexed by the city of Denver. In the late 1870s, Denver citizens began moving to the area.

In 1925, Temple Buell, a Denver architect, noticed that the area had grown into a small town. He bought land next to the Cherry Creek River. In 1946, with the growing number of automobiles and people’s willingness to shop in areas other than downtown, Buell began building a shopping center on this land.

The Cherry Creek area is located along the Smokey Hill Trail just north of the Cherry Creek floodplain and offers an area of rich, fertile land inhabited mainly by buffalo grass and wildflowers. Due to the climate in the area, greenhouses sprang up filled with abundant carnations. Scientists discovered that Colorado grown carnations offered superior longevity to those grown elsewhere. In 1935, 10 million carnations were shipped out of the area and the city was known as the “Carnation Capital.”

Soon after, the town of Harman was renamed to Cherry Creek because of the chokecherry bushes growing along the banks of the Cherry Creek River. Colorado Boulevard and University Avenue frame the city of Cherry Creek on the north and south respectively, and 6th Avenue and Exposition on the east and west. In recent years, the southernmost boundary has extended itself southward from Cherry Creek Drive all the way to Alameda.
