In 1889, Lakewood, Colorado was known as an urban/suburban development. Charles Welch and W.A.H. Loveland platted a 13-block area along Colfax Avenue west of Denver in eastern Lakewood for the town of Lakewood.

In 1969, the city of Lakewood, Colorado was incorporated. At this time, the city population was already over 90,000 people making Lakewood one of the largest cities at the time of original incorporation in the U.S.

William Frederick Hayden Park on Green Mountain has over 2,400 acres of open space and is the second largest park in Lakewood. Enjoy the challenging network of multi-use trails including a 13-mile loop at the summit of Green Mountain. The summit reaches 6,800 feet and offers unique and stunning views of the Denver Metropolitan area to the east, as well as high mountain peaks to the west. The majority of William Frederick Hayden Park was donated by or purchased from the Hayden Family since 1972. Once home to the buffalo, this park now provides rich habitat for a diverse array of wildlife including coyotes, hawks, rattlesnakes, bluebirds, rabbit, mule deer, and an occasional mountain lion.

Bear Creek Lake Park located at 15600 Morrison Road is both a park and campground facility.
