HISTORY

During the “Pikes Peak” gold rush of 1859, Littleton, Colorado was an important town. Littleton, Colorado’s farmers and merchants sold goods and services to prospectors on their way to seek their fortune. As Denver City began to grow, there was a need to construct a series of ditches to carry water to farms and businesses that did not have ready access to rivers and creeks. Since much of the area is semi-arid, Denver hired engineers to lay out a system. Richard Sullivan Little of New Hampshire came to the Littleton area to survey the land. Little fell in love with the area and filed a home stake and other land claims. He began farming in the area and joined with several other neighbors to build the Rough and Ready Flour Mill in 1867. This mill provided a solid economic base in the community for years to come.

When the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad reached the area in 1871, settlements and economic growth began at a rapid pace. In 1872, the Littles filed a plat to subdivide much of their property into the village of Littleton. In 1876 when Colorado was admitted as a state, there were schools, churches, a hotel and stores in the village of Littleton. The 245 residents in Littleton voted to incorporate the town of Littleton in 1890.

In 1902 when the old Arapahoe County was divided into Arapahoe, Denver, Adams, Washington and Yuma counties, Littleton was awarded the temporary county seat and eventually became the county seat for Arapahoe County. This brought an economic boost to the county with government jobs and businesses.

However, agriculture remained the staple industry of Littleton until after World War II. Littleton, Colorado offered homes to businesses in electronics and pneumatics, moving to munitions and to aerospace. Manufacturing became the important employer in Littleton, Colorado and accounted for the boom in housing development during the fifties, sixties and seventies.

Alfred Packer grave site and tombstone, compliments of the government, is located at the southwest quarter of lot 65 in the Littleton Cemetery. In 1873, Alfred Packer was employed to lead twenty-one men seeking their fortunes in the gold fields near Breckenridge, Colorado. After an arduous three months in unrelenting winter weather, they located the camp of Ute Indian Chief Ouray, near present-day Montrose, and were provided food and shelter. Against the advice of Chief Ouray, Packer and five other men continued their trek eastward, not wishing to lose further time waiting for a break in the weather. Sixty-six days later, only Packer emerged from the mountains —looking more fit than he should. He first claimed that he had become separated from his companions in the blinding snow and had survived on rabbits and rose buds. But when confronted about having a lot of money and personal possessions of the missing men, he finally admitted his tale of cannibalism: how four of the men had died in turn from the extreme conditions and been eaten by the rest, and how he killed the fifth crazed companion, Shannon Bell, in self-defense before devouring him, as well. He was convicted of manslaughter and only served 5 years in prison. The remainder of his life he lived in Littleton, Colorado.
