HISTORY

Parker, Colorado offered a prime hunting area for the Plains-Woodland Indians, Arapaho, Cheyenne and Ute Indians in the 1800’s. Many famous explorers, such as James Pursley, Baptiste LaLande, Stephen H. Long and John Charles Fremont, came to this area. Early traders, trappers, frontiersmen and gold seekers used the old Indian trail running next to Cherry Creek near Parker. Famous men such as John Beck, Captain R. B. Marcy, William Green Russell, Thomas Fitzpatrick, Jim Baker, “Uncle Dick” Wooten (Wootton) and Kit Carson all roamed the Parker valley. The trail that they used was known by several names, such as the Cherokee Trail, the South Branch of the Smoky Hill Trail and a branch of Trapper’s Trail.

When stage lines headed into Colorado, the stage lines were known as the West Cherry Creek Stage Road and the Denver-Santa Fe Stage Road.

In 1858 when gold was discovered in Colorado, over 100,000 people followed the trails in search of their fortunes. Small towns and settlements sprang up along the way and Parker, Colorado was no exception. In 1863, Alfred Butters came to the Parker area and built a one room building in the pines south of the present day Hilltop Road, now known as Rampart Station. Butters was the post master, provided provisions and a place to leave messages. He named this area Pine Grove.

Soon after, Butters traded the building to a Mr. Goldsmith for a yoke of oxen. Goldsmith then sold the land and building to Mr. and Mrs. George Long in 1864. The Longs moved the structure to the site of present day Town of Parker. They built a rough addition and some other buildings to accommodate animals and wagons. This way station provided meals, lodging and provision and was called the 20 Mile House because it was located 20 miles south of Denver.

In 1874, James Sample Parker, an ex-bullwhacker and station manager, bought the 20 Mile House and made further changes to the house. He added a blacksmith shop with equipment to shoe oxen and a general mercantile store. This building became the first official post office in Parker. James Parker granted rights-of-way for future roads, ditches, telephone lines and eventually the Denver and New Orleans Railroad.

He built the first school across the road from the 20 Mile House. Many of families who settled in the Parker area were of Scandinavian descent and they established dairy farms and raised cattle or horses. They experimented with dry land farming until irrigation ditches were built connected to Cherry Creek.

The Denver and New Orleans Railroad was the first standard gauge railroad to cross Douglas County, running between Denver and Pueblo. “Pollywog” was the affectionate name given the first train. The Denver and New Orleans Railroad boasted 10 locomotives, 13 passenger cars and 200 freight cars. The line eventually became the Colorado and Southern Railroad. However, in 1913, operations on the rail lines were slowing down. In 1935 after a major flood washed out many of the trestles, operations were discontinued.

Close to fifty years later, the Town of Parker was incorporated in 1981. The town included the Rowley Downs subdivision, the downtown area and the Parker Square and Parker Plaza commercial areas. The incorporated area encompassed approximately one square mile and included 285 residents. Soon after incorporation in 1981, the Town adopted zoning and subdivision ordinances.

The first ten years after incorporation, the town of Parker increased from one square mile to 13 square miles and the Parker’s population increased from less than 300 people to currently more than 45,000 people.

Currently, Parker, Colorado is 18.8 square miles, located twenty miles southeast of Denver, Colorado and is 5,900 feet above sea level. Parker, Colorado has a total area of 14.6 square miles of land and less than 1 square mile of water. Known as a commuter town, Parker is the 17 th most populous municipality in the state of Colorado. Parker, Colorado has experienced on average 18% of county growth per year. With the current population of approximately 41,600 people, estimated population by 2030 will be 71,500.

Parker, Colorado has both incorporated and unincorporated areas accounting for its population. There is a 1 to .75 ratio between the incorporated population and adjacent and surrounding areas. As a result, projected build out population for Parker’s incorporated population will be around 85,000, but the Parker area total population will approach 150,000.

Seventy-five percent of residents living in Parker are married and 48% have college degrees as well as 83% with some college education ascompared to the region and the state of Colorado. The median household income is $82,961 per year and the average household size is 3.01.

Bar CCC Park located on Main Street just east of Cherry Creek has 7.7 beautifulacres to enjoy. This park offers access to the Cherry Creek and Sulphur Gulch Trails via a trailhead, parking, a ball field and shade shelter.

Challenger Regional Park is located along Lincoln Avenue just west of the Cherry Creek Trail and Open Space Corridor and offers 64 acres with three lighted ball fields, a children’s playground and a multi-purpose soccer field area. Enjoy the three outdoor inline hockey rinks and a skateboard park.

East Bank Park is located along the west side of Parker Road just north of Indian Pipe Lane and the Country Meadows subdivision. This 6-acre park includes a trailhead, and a picnic area with parking. The Parker Arboretum is also located here.

O’Brien Park located on Main Street near downtown Parker. This 8.5-acre park includes a lighted softball field, basketball court, a playground and an outdoor pool with slides and a variety of water features. Salisbury Equestrian Park located along Motsenbocker Road just north of the Town’s Public Works department. This 160-acre park offers Parker’s equestrian community, as well as a variety of youth and adult sports leagues outdoor fun activities.

Stroh Ranch Soccer Fields located on the north side of Stroh Road, west of Cherry Creek. This 16.5-acre has two regulation size soccer fields, a playground and a picnic shelter. There is adjoining open space extending from the northern boundary of the park to Cherry Creek.

Tallman Meadow Park located on the east side of Parker in the Idyllwilde community and was developed jointly by the Town of Parker and Village Homes. Enjoy a wonderful day in the sun in this 12-acre park that has a rustic western theme and boasts picnic and barbeque facilities. Sit under a shade shelter while kids play at nearby two playground areas. There is multi-use sports field and baseball field. The park’s meandering trails connect to the Tallman Gulch Regional Trail via pedestrian bridge.

The Town of Parker, Ryland Homes and Prairie Crossing Elementary School developed Auburn Hills Community Park. This three-acre park features a large, multi-use sports field used for Recreation Department programs as well as school programs. The park also includes six educational stations – a butterfly garden, weather station, plant life cycle, Colorado wildlife and geology, astronomy and outdoor seating area for class lectures.

 

SCHOOLS

Douglas County School District RE-1 operates the schools in Parker, Colorado. The two main high schools in Parker are:

Chaparral High School is located 15655 Brookstone Drive , Parker, in the Stonegate subdivision for students in grades 9 through 12. Currently there are 2,170 students in attendance.

Ponderosa High School is located at 7007 East Bayou Gulch Road , Parker and has 1,958 students attending grades 9 through 12.

Sagewood Middle School is located at 4725 Fox Sparrow Road , Parker. This feeder school for Ponderosa High School has 1,077 students in grades 7 and 8.
