HISTORY

Farmers and ranchers, came to work the rich fertile soil and abundant water supply in the area, and settled Thornton, Colorado in the 1800’s. The area was growing during the gold rush days but Thornton, Colorado was mostly farmland. In 1953, Sam Hoffman purchased a lot off Washington Street about seven miles north of Denver. He plotted the area as a first fully planned community in Adams County. At this time, the new city of Thornton offered full municipal services from a single tax levy and included recreation services and free trash pickup. The city of Thornton was named in honor of Colorado Governor Dan Thornton.

In 1954, the Thornton Community Association (TCA) was formed and guided the city’s development. By the end of 1955, Thornton had 5,500 residents in over 1,200 homes. The TCA was also instrumental in incorporating Thornton in 1956 as a city.
